Which country has the most professional game development companies? Out of popular developer countries, which one has the most professional game development companies? I am a developer and I am curious about that.

While gamedev is rather lucrative for DLC and other quick money stuff, but it's no blooming. Moreover, in the outsourcing era, the number of offices in a country is not a presentable sampling.
Besides the USA, it's Russia, the GB, China, India, Japan, and other countries with a proper population/education ratio.

Are we talking about companies that produced games in the 80's for the Sinclair machines or what? The pertinent answer for the topics discussed in this forum is obviously the UK.

It's a tricky issue, including international groups vs native teams, authors vs publishers, offices vs production facilities, and so on. Considering the development, the best coder are from countries with a specialized education and a decent theoretical and practical base: the USA, the UK, ex-USSR, India, China, Japan, Spain, and others -- no matter for Speccy, C64, or PC. However, it's a pity in the WOS Archive one cannot [yet?] easily filter entries for statistics, getting hard numbers
